Trading bots: frequently asked questions

A trading bot is software that places trades from rules set in advance. Bots work in the sense that they follow those rules exactly. Whether they make money depends entirely on the rules. They can lose your whole balance, they cannot predict prices, and the safe way to start is on a demo account with a flat stake and a stop loss.

The short version

QuestionAnswer
Do trading bots work? They execute rules reliably. Profit depends on the rules.
Can they lose money?Yes, including the whole account balance.
Do I need to code? No. Question-based and visual builders need none.
Do I need a lot of money? No. Test on demo, then start at the broker's minimum stake.
Can they run while I sleep?Server-based bots can. Browser-based bots need the tab open.
Are they legal?Generally yes on your own account where your broker allows it. Check your country's rules.

How people get hurt

Three patterns account for most bad experiences: paying a stranger for a bot with guaranteed profits, running Martingale on real money after a short winning streak on demo, and running a bot with no stop loss. All three are avoidable on the first day.

How to start well

  1. Learn the contract by hand

Place a few manual trades on demo so you know what the bot will be buying.

  2. Run a flat-stake bot on demo

Any simple template will do. The point is to learn to read a run.

  3. Set limits as money

A stop loss and a profit target, decided before you press start.

  4. Keep a record

Win rate, average win and loss, longest losing streak, deepest drawdown.

  5. Go live at the minimum stake

Only if you would accept the demo numbers in real money.

Questions people ask

What is a trading bot?
Software that watches a market and places trades automatically when conditions you defined are met. It decides nothing beyond the rules it was given.
Do trading bots really make money?
Some strategies do over some periods. Most retail bots, especially those built on stake doubling, win often and then lose a large amount at once. No bot makes money reliably without an edge in its rules.
How much does a trading bot cost?
It ranges from free to expensive, and price is no guide to quality. Bot Forge and Auto Hub use tool packages; current prices and terms are shown in Discover.
Which is the best trading bot for Deriv?
The best one for you is the one whose rules you understand and have tested on your own demo account. Start with a flat-stake bot and a stop loss.
Is Martingale a good bot strategy?
It produces many small wins and, eventually, one loss large enough to cancel them. It is the most common reason bot accounts are emptied. If you use it, limit the steps and cap the single stake.
Can I run more than one bot at once?
Yes, within the platform's limit. They share one balance, so treat their combined loss as a single risk.
Will a bot keep running if my internet drops?
A server-based bot will, because it does not depend on your device. A bot running in your browser stops when the page loses its connection.
How long can a bot run?
Until it reaches one of its limits or you stop it. Set the limits so that you are comfortable with either ending.
Do I pay tax on bot profits?
Trading profits are taxable in many countries, and the rules differ widely. Ask a qualified adviser where you live.
Is a bot safer than trading by hand?
It is more disciplined, not safer. It will follow a stop loss without hesitation, and it will follow a losing rule the same way.

Run a bot that keeps its limits

FXNOD's bots run on its servers and will not start without a stop loss, so your limits hold when your device is off. Build one in Bot Forge or start a ready-made one in Auto Hub, on your Deriv demo account first.
